Maintaining the Chlorine Pre-Treatment System After Installation (below)
Hercules Iron-Sulfur Filter Installation Instructions

Installing the Chlorination System
(This makes it a Hercules II System)

1. Unpack everything.

2. Set the tanks the way you need to so that they will fit your floor plan.

3. Line up the inlet so it will be easy to plumb in. Be sure to have the tank drain spigot accessible.
Hook up the inlet to your water source. The inlet has a tee fitting with a ball valve shutoff on each side. This chlorine feed line goes in here. The line goes into the bottom tank inlet.

4. Next, the outlet that goes to filters is off the top of the retention tank.
Use the ball valve shutoff supplied in between the retention tank and the filter.

5. Next, the electric hookup to control the Chem-Tech Feed Pump - The wire and the outlet box to plug the pump into are needed.
Just mount the box and hook the line into pressure switch on the load side. They hook to the same terminals as the water pump.
See the pump manual.

6. When everything is hooked up and ready - Fill the solution tank 1/3 full. Put 1/3 gallon of bleach into it.
Set the pump dial at 100%. This is just a starting point. Final adjustment may take several days to fine-tune it. Use the pump owner's manual.

If you can, plug the pump power cord into a hot outlet (or go to Step #7). You may plug it in and get the solution in the feed line. Sometimes you need to suck on the end to get it flowing above the tank. Then work the air out of the line as it fills and hook it into the tee. At this point, set the dial at 40%. Fill the tank and add the 2/3 gallon of bleach.

Note: After installation, whenever the chlorine water mixture gets down to 6” or so, you should refill it with the same ratio mixture that you ended up with after final adjustments.

Final adjustment you should have 1 to 2 ppm residual chlorine as tested at the spiget on the bottom of the wellmate tank.
Note this test should be done after several hours of not using water. Chlorine gets used up in reactions. What is left over is the residual,
this is keeps keep the filters clean. The filters will remove this, if you smell or taste chlorine, it is to high.
If you get stains or odor it is to low. Running it in this condition can ruin the second tank or shorten its life,
repacking kits are available.

TANK DOES NOT REFILL AUTOMATICALLY. If you do not and the tank runs down, you will have to bleed the lines to get the air out before it can work properly again. This is a nuisance that may be avoided simply by keeping an eye on the tank level.
Suggestion: Mark the level on outside of tank with a marker.

7. Plug the Chem-Tech pump power cord into the outlet going into the outlet going to the pressure switch.
Put the filter in the backwash position (unplugged). This lets the air out as everything fills with water.
Turn the water on slowly at first and check for leaks. Fix them, if needed.

8. When the filter tanks start filling, slow the flow down.

IMPORTANT!!! A fast flow and all the air can blow the media up into the filter valve and plug it up - so be careful.
Use full flow to backwash and purge the filter. Then flush the filter until water is clear.

9. Plug in the power to the Control Valve, and let it finish the remaining cycles automatically.

Maintaining the Chlorine Pre-Treatment System After Installation

1. After your system is all set up and your pipes have been sanitized fill, the 15-gallon solution tank with filtered water. Filtered water is drawn from the spigot after the final filter.

2. When testing water for the first time, water should set undisturbed for several hours or overnight so that only residual chlorine will show up. Use a basic pool care test kit with OTO drops. Test water is taken at the bottom of the big WellMate tank - drain spigot. Also, if dirty water comes out, hook a hose to this drain spigot every few months and drain off water until it comes clean.

ADJUST % OF CHLORINE ONLY WHILE PUMP IS RUNNING

3. When the 15-gallon Solution Tank gets low, add 1-2 gal. of bleach and fill rest with water. After 3 days, check chlorine level again and make adjustment accordingly. If you have smell, stain, or odor at you tap, the chlorine level is not high enough OR if you have chlorine taste or odor, the chlorine level is too high. Adjusting properly will avoid these problems. The bleach water ratio may have to be changed as needed to tune the system.

4. Every 6 months - Clean the little white ball in the top check valve on the
15-gallon Solution Tank in vinegar. (The check valve is between the two shut-off valves where the chlorine enters the water pipe). First - close the two white valves with the red handles before opening the check valve. Put into the vinegar.
Note: Keep tube up in the air where you disconnect the check valve in order to keep the liquid inside, otherwise, you will have to prime the pump by sucking on the end of the tubing to get the liquid in the tube above the pump.

5. Every 9-12 months - Change final cartridge filter or sooner if water pressure drops. First, depressurize water before changing. To depressurize, shut off water to the system, open the spigot after the filter, & then shut it off. A spurt of water will come out, and then quickly close the valve next to the filter housing. (This will stop water draining back from your plumbing). Then remove & replace with new filter cartridge.
